Students may also submit their works to the creative writing competitions, many of which are open to students of all majors. 

 

Scholarships for English, creative writing, and teaching of English majors

The following awards are available to any undergraduate majors in the Department of English, including English, creative writing, and teaching of English majors.

Delmar G. Cooke Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing.

Charles S. Montooth Scholarship

This scholarship is for Department of English majors entering their junior year. The scholarship can be renewable.

Carolyn Joyce Pape Award

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of junior or senior standing.

Emily J. Friedrich Memorial Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing.

Robert D. Novak Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing with demonstrated
superior writing skills, as evidenced by their application essays.

Miles W. O’Loughlin III Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing.

Raymond Seng Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing who meet the following criteria:

  • Illinois resident
  • Top 25% of high school class
  • Good personal reputation

Application essays must address your qualifications for this scholarship. The scholarship can be renewable. 

Paul J. Cooke English Award

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing.

Tessa M. Oberg Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing, who have been employed part-time while enrolled as full-time students, and whose application essay demonstrates a focused extracurricular commitment.

Phyllis Woodmansee Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing, with preference given to students whose first language is not English.

Ethel Frances Crate Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors of any class standing.

Scholarships for teaching of English majors

J. N. Hook Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to teaching of English majors with junior or senior standing, preparing to teach English in junior or senior high school, with consideration of financial need (as presented by the student’s
scholarship application essay).

Alfred & Norma Snap Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to teaching of English majors with junior or senior standing, who are planning to teach at the high school level.

Leo B. Kneer Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to teaching of English majors with demonstrated potential as an English teacher

Veda Streitmatter & Arlys Streitmatter Conrad Scholarship

This merit-based award is open to Department of English majors with demonstrated potential as an English teacher. Students must be junior standing, with demonstrated promise or success in study of English language and grammar, with preference to those enrolled in teaching of English, ‘first preference that scholarship recipients be from downstate Illinois.’

Scholarships for honors students

Smalley Prize for Outstanding Honors Achievement

This merit-based award is open to students in the English Honors Program and is awarded for the best English honors essay.
